The Meaning Behind Sau-cha
Deriving from Sanskrit terminology, Saucha is the first element in Niyama (the second limb of the Patanjali’s 8 limbs of yoga), meaning pure and clean. The word “cha” in Chinese means tea. Therefore, our brand name Sau-cha represents the DNA of our company – with teas that combine a blend of Ayurveda with TCM.
An Ancient History
Ayurveda
Ayurveda is known as the ‘Mother of Medicine’. The name derives from two Sanskrit words – ‘ayus’, meaning life, and ‘Veda meaning knowledge. Deriving from traditional Indian philosophy, Ayurdevic knowledge dates as far back as 5,000 years ago.
Ayurveda is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. Its main goal is to promote good health instead of fighting disease. It is believed in Ayurveda that every person is made of five basic elements found in the universe: space, air, fire, water, and earth. These combine in the human body to form three life forces or energies, called Doshas. Every person has these three Doshas in their body with one of them being dominant. Your dominant Dosha contributes to your body built, your reception to different food and your general health. It is believed that the health issues you develop are linked to the imbalance of your Doshas.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is thousands of years old and has seldom changed over the centuries. Its core concept is that a vital force of life, called Qi, surges throughout the body. Any imbalance to Qi can cause disease and illness. This imbalance is most commonly thought to be caused by an alteration in the opposite and complementary forces that make up the Qi, otherwise known as yin and yang. Ancient Chinese Medicine believed that humans are microcosms of the larger surrounding universe and are interconnected with nature and subject to its forces. Therefore, the balance between health and disease is a crucial concept.
Ayurveda and TCM Fusion
Both Ayurveda and TCM are gentle, nature-based, holistic health systems that aim to put the whole body in balance. In Ayurveda and TCM, the body and mind are seen as inseparable. The underlying philosophy for both is that good health in the body, mind, and spirit, revolves around the correct flow of ‘Qi’ (pronounced ‘chi’) in TCM and Prana in Ayurveda – the subtle energy of the body. Both aim to balance each individual body, normalising or regulating organs and systems by using combinations of herbs.
There are three main body types in Ayurveda (based on your dominant Dosha), namely Kapha, Pitta and Vata. These form the basis of our three core tea blends. Each of our three core blend is blended specifically to balance each Dosha. When your Dosha is in balance then you will have good flow of Qi or Prana which lead to optimal health. These ancient principles provide the foundations of our tea blends – brimming with adaptogens, herbs and roots to naturally reduce stress and alleviate symptoms of chronic disease.
